About the Department:

The Department of Dravyaguna Vigyana is dedicated to the study of medicinal plants and their therapeutic applications. It covers pharmacognosy (identification, collection, preservation, and storage), as well as the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of herbs through concepts such as Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, and Prabhava.

The department also focuses on pharmacotherapeutics (Karmas) of medicinal herbs, ensuring students gain both classical and contemporary knowledge of Ayurveda. It is supported by a well-established herbal garden with more than 250 species of medicinal plants and a museum with 150 dry specimens, providing hands-on learning opportunities.

Vision Statement:

  • To provide best teaching facilities by which students can understand classical and contemporary knowledge about Dravyaguna Vigyana.
  • To Develop Herbal Garden with more species by which students can explore both existing as well as developing flora.
  • To develop herbarium of each medicinal plants.
  • To develop well establish museum for demonstration of dry specimens to the students.
  • To provide regular visitation of herbal gardens with in the state and outside the state by which students can acquire more knowledge about medicinal plants.

Mission Statement:

  • To establish a quality control laboratory equipped with modern analytical tools for standardization of medicinal plants.
  • To encourage research activities and training programs for scholars and stakeholders to validate the therapeutic efficacy of medicinal plants.
  • To integrate traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern scientific methods for global acceptance.

Objectives

1. To provide quality education in Ayurveda and Dravyaguna Vigyana.
2. To train students in both classical methods and modern standardization techniques of Ayurvedic drugs.
3. To develop herbarium and museum resources for effective teaching and demonstration.
4. To strengthen research in pharmacognosy and pharmacotherapeutics of medicinal plants.

Practical Exposure:

Although primarily a pre-clinical department, Dravyaguna Vigyana plays a crucial role in supporting clinical practice. It provides knowledge of medicinal plants that forms the basis for Ayurvedic prescriptions and therapies.
The department contributes to clinical services by guiding the selection, preparation, and administration of herbal formulations. Through its herbal garden, museum, and laboratory facilities, students gain practical exposure to the identification and therapeutic use of medicinal plants, ensuring they are well-prepared to apply this knowledge in patient care.
