About the Department:

Child is the father of man and the future of a nation’. The right of children to quality healthcare and physical and mental well-being thus assures the future of society. Respect for children above all else is the responsibility of the community and healthcare professionals. The Department Bala Roga (Kaumarbhritya) is the unit of Main Campus, UAU, Dehradun dedicated to teaching and training of Ayurvedic Pediatrics and providing healthcare to children. Its three major functional domains are the hospital, academics, and research. The activities of research, training, education, and advocacy have been designed with the basic aim of providing highest quality of Ayurvedic healthcare to the children. To further strengthen our basic aim, we are committed to continuously upgrade ourselves and make use of evidence-based medicine, as this is essential to ensure rationalized and effective pediatric healthcare through Ayurveda in today’s era.

Vision Statement:

To develop the department into a globally recognized center of excellence in teaching, training, research, and healthcare in Ayurvedic Pediatrics.

Mission Statement:

The primary mission of the Department of Bal Roga, Main Campus, UAU, Dehradun, is to improve the lives of children by providing the highest quality of Ayurvedic healthcare and to improve outcomes through research, training, education, and advocacy.

Objectives

1. To shape the students of Ayurveda in a manner that they emerge as leaders in Ayurvedic pediatrics and serve the community with the best blend of sincerity, commitment, open-mindedness, out-of-the-box thinking, and rationality.
2. To transform the department into state of art Ayurvedic Pediatrics specialty center which can provide all services under one roof so that children can have access to the best preventive, diagnostic and treatment services.
3. To emerge as a globally recognized center of excellence in inter-disciplinary teaching, training, and research in Ayurvedic Pediatrics.
4. To find answers to the emerging challenges in pediatric healthcare in the present era.
5. To develop protocols for Ayurvedic healthcare in pediatric diseases of concern in present times.
6. To identify the grey areas in modern pediatrics and try to come up with effective solutions through Ayurveda.
7. To work synergistically with modern medicine in designing integrated protocols for the management of various pediatric health issues.
8. To develop excellence in education, continuous learning, and professional development, which goes long in ensuring optimal outcomes in pediatric healthcare through Ayurveda.
9. Modeling professionalism by intra-departmental, inter-departmental and inter-institutional, and inter-pathy (Allopathy, Homeopathy, etc.) collaboration and shared problem-solving.
10. Valuing innovations and discoveries in the field of academics, research, and medical education and providing platforms for promoting such activities because discovery and dissemination of knowledge are the tools to advance children’s health and in turn the health of future society.
11. To design courses for medical professionals so that they are able to practice Ayurveda in the pediatric age group in a rational and mutually complementary manner.
12. To popularize the judicious use of Ayurveda in child health care in India and abroad.

Practical Exposure:

Students of Kaumarbhritya gain extensive practical exposure through:

  • Child-friendly OPD and IPD postings, where they observe and assist in pediatric consultations and treatments.
  • Hands-on training in Ayurvedic pediatric procedures such as Suvarnaprashana (Ayurvedic immunization), Lehana (supplementary feeding), and dietary counseling.
  • Exposure to growth and developmental assessments, including anthropometry and milestone evaluation.
  • Practical experience in managing common childhood disorders like fever, respiratory infections, digestive disturbances, and skin conditions.
  • Participation in maternal and child health awareness programs, pediatric health camps, and extension activities.
  • Case discussions and clinical demonstrations to correlate Ayurvedic principles with modern pediatric practices.

This structured exposure ensures that graduates develop strong clinical acumen, diagnostic skills, and confidence in managing child health through Ayurveda.
