About the Department:
The Department of Shalya Tantra is a core clinical branch of Ayurveda that deals with surgical and para-surgical practices described in classical texts. It encompasses Shastra Karma (surgical interventions), Anushastra Karma (para-surgical procedures), Kshara Karma (alkaline cauterization), and Agnikarma (thermal cauterization). The department also focuses on the management of wounds, fractures, trauma, urinary disorders, anorectal diseases, and other surgical conditions, integrating Ayurvedic wisdom with modern surgical knowledge.
Students are trained in both theoretical and practical aspects of Ayurvedic surgery, ensuring competence in minor surgical procedures, wound care, emergency management, and para-surgical techniques. The department plays a vital role in preparing graduates to deliver safe, effective, and affordable surgical care.

Students of Shalya Tantra gain extensive practical exposure through:
- OPD and IPD postings where they observe and assist in patient care.
- Hands-on training in minor surgical procedures such as abscess drainage, wound suturing, cyst removal, and dressing techniques.
- Para-surgical practices including Kshara Karma for piles and fistula, and Agnikarma for musculoskeletal pain, varicose veins, and skin lesions.
- Emergency management and trauma care, including fracture stabilization and wound management.
- Clinical demonstrations and case discussions to correlate theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
- Participation in surgical awareness camps and extension activities, enhancing their community service skills.
This structured exposure ensures that graduates develop strong clinical acumen, surgical skills, and confidence to practice Ayurveda effectively in both hospital and community settings.
